Amazon has signed a landmark 600 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Skyborn Renewables for electricity from the 976.5 MW Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, marking the largest single corporate renewable energy PPA ever signed in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. The agreement provides a major commercial milestone for the long-awaited offshore wind project and strengthens the financial foundation needed to advance construction activities ahead of planned commissioning in 2028.
Amazon’s Record-Breaking PPA with Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm
Amazon’s 600 MW of electricity purchase from the Gennaker offshore wind farm represents one of the most significant corporate renewable energy transactions in Europe this year. The agreement, announced by Amazon and Skyborn Renewables on June 19, 2026, covers approximately 61% of the wind farm’s planned generating capacity and is being described as the largest individual power purchase agreement ever executed in Germany.

The deal is a major breakthrough for the Gennaker project, which has been under development for more than a decade and is set to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. Once operational, the project will add up to 976.5 MW of new offshore wind generation capacity to Germany’s electricity system. It is also expected to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German households annually.
Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm: Project Overview
Located approximately 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Gennaker will comprise 63 Siemens Gamesa offshore wind turbines rated at 15 MW each, installed on monopile foundations. The project is connected to the German transmission system through grid operator 50Hertz and has a targeted commercial operation date of 2028.
Financial Close for the Project
For Skyborn Renewables, the agreement significantly reduces revenue uncertainty and improves bankability ahead of financial close. The developer has stated that Amazon’s long-term commitment provides the commercial certainty necessary to proceed with construction of the project. Gennaker has also recently secured key permits and contractor agreements. Construction activities are expected to accelerate following financial close anticipated during the summer of 2026.

Germany’s Offshore Wind Expansion Plans
The project is also strategically important for Germany’s offshore wind expansion plans. Berlin has set ambitious targets to reach 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. Gennaker’s nearly 1 GW capacity contribution will make it one of the most important new renewable energy assets entering the German market before the end of the decade.
The development also strengthens Germany’s energy security by increasing the supply of domestically generated carbon-free electricity. This also includes supply from onshore wind farms such as Mercedes-Benz’s Papenburg wind farm in nothern Germany. Gennaker offshore wind farm is also expected to provide long-term economic benefits to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania through construction employment, supply-chain and port activities, and associated service industries.
As Germany continues to accelerate offshore wind deployment in both the North Sea and Baltic Sea, the Gennaker project is expected to serve as one of the flagship developments. It will also demonstrate how long-term corporate PPAs can support large-scale renewable infrastructure investment. And in turn strengthen Europe’s clean energy transition.
Amazon’s Expanding Renewable Energy Portfolio in Germany
For Amazon, the transaction further expands its renewable energy portfolio in Germany. Following the agreement, the company’s German carbon-free energy portfolio now includes 12 renewable energy projects. They have a combined capacity exceeding 1.3 GW. Once fully operational, these projects are expected to generate enough clean electricity annually to meet the equivalent demand of more than 1.8 million German households.

The latest Gennaker PPA also highlights the growing role of large corporate buyers in underwriting utility-scale renewable energy projects. Corporate PPAs have increasingly become an importantly financing mechanism for renewable developers. This is because they provide predictable revenue streams while helping major energy consumers meet sustainability and decarbonization goals.
