Georgia Power announced it has begun construction of a 200 megawatt (MW) battery storage facility (BESS) in Twiggs County, located southeast of Macon, Georgia. The project was selected through the company’s competitive process under its 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Update and received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) on September 4, 2025. Georgia Power will own the facility and has located it next to the existing Twiggs County Solar facility.
This 200 MW BESS is designed to dispatch stored energy over a four-hour period—a configuration that enables the stored electricity to be released when demand spikes (for example, cold winter mornings when solar generation is unavailable).
In doing so, the project supports grid reliability, enhances the value of intermittent renewables like solar. It also aligns with the capacity needs identified in Georgia Power’s 2023 IRP Update.
According to Georgia Power Senior Vice President and Senior Production Officer Rick Anderson:
“With the construction of the 200 MW BESS in Twiggs County, we will be able to better serve our existing customers and support Georgia’s growth … these batteries will play an invaluable role in helping to ensure reliability and flexibility, particularly when renewable sources are not available.”
Broader Storage Plans Across Georgia
Construction is already under way on four additional BESS facilities in Georgia (in Bibb, Cherokee, Floyd and Lowndes counties) totaling 765 MW, with expected completion dates in 2026.
Meanwhile, Georgia Power is seeking PSC approval for 10 new BESS projects totaling 3,022.5 MW, plus two new solar systems paired with BESS (350 MW). An additional request-for-proposals (RFP) is open for 500 MW of energy storage systems (ESS) with minimum two-hour discharge duration, with bids due early 2026 and a goal of being online by 2031.
Factsheet of the Battery Storage Facility
Developer: Georgia Power (company-owned)
Location: Twiggs County, Georgia (adjacent to existing solar facility)
Capacity: 200 MW
Discharge duration: Designed for ~4-hour dispatch
Regulatory approval: Approved by Georgia Public Service Commission, Sept 4 2025
Construction partner: Crowder Industrial Construction, LLC
Target completion: 2027
Broader storage portfolio:
4 other BESS projects under construction (765 MW) — completion 2026
10 proposed BESS projects (3,022.5 MW) + 2 solar + BESS (350 MW)
500 MW ESS RFP by 2031.
This project marks a significant step toward integrating large-scale battery storage and enhancing grid flexibility in Georgia. It helps bridge the gap between renewable generation peaks and demand valleys. It also reflects Georgia Power’s forward-looking planning under its IRP framework.
