Google has confirmed that it is the developer of Project Mica, a $10 billion data center campus in Kansas City’s Northland. Trystine Payfer, Google’s Regional Head of Data Center Public Affairs, confirmed the project to local media, clarifying the company behind the large-scale development and highlighting a major investment in the region’s digital infrastructure.
Project Mica spans nearly 500 acres near the northeast corner of Interstate 435 and U.S. Highway 169 in Clay County and is expected to include five hyperscale data center buildings totaling roughly 1.56 million square feet of computing space. The project represents one of the largest technology infrastructure investments in the history of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Construction on the campus is already underway, marking a transition from planning into active development. To support the project, the Port Authority of Kansas City (Port KC) has authorized up to $10 billion in taxable revenue bonds. Which include long-term property tax exemptions, sales tax exemptions for construction materials, and other incentives. Google has also committed $1.5 million to the Smithville School District and $250,000 to the Northland Career Center as part of workforce development initiatives.
Power supply
Officials report that Project Mica will draw a significant amount of power — nearly 700 megawatts — supported by a dedicated electrical substation and multiple high-capacity transmission lines. Google has established a long-term agreement with the Evergy, region’s primary electricity provider. Covering full energy costs for both of its Kansas City data center campuses. The agreement includes contract terms designed to support new generation and transmission infrastructure and accommodate the hyperscale operations’ peak energy demands.
The development forms part of a broader expansion of technology and digital infrastructure in the Kansas City region. Positioning the area as a hub for hyperscale computing and driving local economic growth. The combination of scale, investment, and workforce initiatives highlights the project’s regional significance.
While speaking to the media, Payfer declined to provide a timeline for the full buildout and completion, but confirmed construction and approved financing position Project Mica as a major upcoming addition to the region’s technology landscape.
Additionally, Project Mica’s scale reflects the rapid growth of hyperscale data centers across the United States. Where new campuses are being built at unprecedented size to meet growing cloud and AI computing demands.
