Google has confirmed it is behind the 1GW Project Cannoli data center campus in Van Buren, near Detroit, in Michigan. The development was proposed by Panattoni in December 2025. At the time, the end user behind the development was not shared.
However, Google confirmed earlier this week that it was behind the project based on local reports. The data center campus is set to be constructed in around 130 acres of a 282-acre plot.
Furthermore, it will be based south of Interstate 275, north of Interstate 94, and east of Haggerty Road. Based on site plans, it is likely that the site will entail three data centers. It will also include a networking building and an office building. The total footprint for the project will approximately exceed 800,000 sq. ft. Walbridge has been contracted as the general contractor on the project. Data center projects across the United States are taking shape as Microsoft also advances 490,000 sq. ft. SAT data center campuses in Texas.
Google’s Partnership with DTE Energy on Project Cannoli Data Center Campus
Google has also provided details on its partnership with DTE Energy in addition to its involvement on Project Cannoli data center campus. The tech firm noted that it is partnering with DTE Energy to bring 2.7GW of “new, clean resources” to the local grid. The generated energy will be used to power the data center. A blog post shared by the cloud company states that the power resources will include solar power, advanced storage technologies, and demand flexibility.
Through a clean capacity acceleration agreement with DTE, this will also help the state move away from coal-fired power. Reports have noted that this will be broken down into 1.6GW of solar power and 400MW of four-hour energy storage. It will also include 50MW of long-duration storage and 300MW of “additional clean resources.” TechCrunch asked if this could include natural gas, but did not receive a response.
The remaining 350MW will be covered by demand response. According to Google, the campus will cover its electricity costs and infrastructure needs. In addition, it is setting up a $10m Energy Impact fund. This will help “scale and accelerate energy affordability initiatives that are designed to drive down monthly bills for communities in Michigan.”
