Grady Health System plans to build a more than $1 billion medical campus in South Fulton County, expanding capacity as demand for care continues to rise, the organization said March 18.
Grady will develop the project in phases near Campbellton Fairburn Road in Union City, starting with a medical office building and then a 200-bed acute care hospital. The freestanding emergency department under construction at the site is set to open in June 2026 and will later join the hospital.
The medical office building is scheduled to open in early 2028, with the hospital expected to be completed in 2031.
The campus will include imaging, a surgery center, specialty clinics, rehabilitation services and a pharmacy, along with pediatric care provided in partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The hospital is expected to operate as a Level 3 trauma center, stabilizing patients with serious injuries before transferring more complex cases.
Funding
Grady will fund the project through a mix of sources, including about $300 million in bonds from the Fulton County Government, along with internal financing and philanthropic contributions.
The expansion comes as demand continues to grow, with more than 2,000 patients treated daily and about 155,000 emergency department visits annually. Despite expanded use of outpatient clinics, telehealth and mobile care programs, capacity constraints remain.
Local officials identify South Fulton County as an underserved area for healthcare, where many residents travel outside the region for treatment. The new campus will improve access and ease pressure on existing facilities.
As Grady Health System expands access in South Fulton County, Georgia, other regions are also investing heavily in hospital infrastructure. Recently, Virginia approved $672 million for new hospital capacity in Chesterfield County, reflecting a nationwide trend of expanding healthcare facilities to meet rising patient demand.
