Why use gensets in parallel?

Home » Knowledge » Why use gensets in parallel?

Using gensets in parallel is quite common on occasions when it is necessary to increase the total power of the system, to make it more reliable and to reduce the associated costs.

A parallel running system means connecting two or more units (or one unit and the grid) so that they can supply power together and thus ensure greater power, adaptability to load variations, greater reliability, and more efficient consumption.

All applications are different and require diverse energy features and availability. Often, you may need a specific energy supply for a certain number of operations and equipment. However, there are many contexts in which power needs are variable, requiring support systems capable of adapting to the different levels of consumption that may occur in the same installation at various times and stages of its operation.

Thus, it becomes difficult to find a power generator that exactly matches the needs of your project and context. And in these cases, using gensets in parallel can be the ideal solution, since in this way the power supply can adapt to both more demanding needs and to moments of lower demand.

The easiest way to create a parallel running system is to use generators that are the same, or at least have the same alternator and output power. Another simple way is to connect two or more generator sets of variable output.

With the help of controllers (and other control systems) that automatically manage the operations of each electrical genset and the distribution of the loads among them, it is possible to have a smooth and harmonious operation of each group and of the entire system.

The advantages of using generators in parallel

Increased reliability

Having two or more generators operating simultaneously provides increased reliability, since in the event that one unit fails, it is possible to ensure that the facility’s essential load is supplied by the other unit(s) in the system.

Greater flexibility

By not being able to accurately predict the energy needs of your project, you can end up purchasing a generator set that is unable to meet your needs or, on the other hand, one that is oversized and ends up being damaged by misuse. With generators in parallel operation it is easier to work according to load variations. In addition, these sets can be disconnected and used separately.

Ease of maintenance

If one generator in the system breaks down or needs maintenance, it can be repaired without disturbing the operation of the other sets, and in this way, it is possible to maintain continuous power supply even in the event of a breakdown.

Improved performance

Electric generators that operate in parallel are generally of lower capacity, with advanced technology engines, high reliability, efficiency and low consumption.
