Updated November 7, 2025: The Federal Executive Council has approved over N43 billion for the completion of Phase II, section II of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said the new approval is part of several fresh and revised contracts across the country to accelerate the pace of critical road projects. Umahi also provided updates on the East–West Road, which the President Bola Tinubu administration inherited at N156 billion. Furthermore, it covers two carriageways, three flyovers and two bridges. According to Umahi, the project has been restructured to ensure timely completion amid heavy traffic and a redesigned pavement structure. “This project was awarded about five years ago but didn’t take off. When Mr President came in, FEC terminated the earlier contract. Now, we’ve re-awarded Phase II, Section II for N43 billion. It includes underpasses, concrete pavement, ramps, and adjoining roads,” Umahi said.

The minister explained that work has been completed on one carriageway and 30 per cent of the second. On the other hand, new flyovers at Abuloma and Refinery Junctions in Rivers State will be presented for fresh approval before the end of the month. He noted that the revised contract also captures additional infrastructure — including flyovers, underpasses, and link roads, that were omitted from earlier designs. In addition, the FEC awarded the third section of the 1,068km Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, covering the Badagry–Ogun–Oyo border segment (162.97km). The section will be built with reinforced concrete pavement at N3.39 billion per kilometre.

December 04, 2022: The contractor in charge of construction works on the Lagos-Ibadan road, Julius Berger has halted work on the highway. This is to enable motorists using the road to enjoy hassle-free movements to their various destinations in the country for the festive period. Adedamola Kuti, the director of the Southwest Federal Ministry of Works, confirmed the development to the correspondent on Monday. He promised to remove the obstacles blocking the road. Kuti added that the construction works would resume in January 2023.

Remarks on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Project

Kuti said, “The issue is that our employees will be traveling during this period because it is December. As a result, we wish to relax and work on the road, so that individuals can enjoy their Christmas vacation. We have been doing this every year over the holiday season. We take down all roadblocks to allow for uninterrupted traffic flow on the express.”.

Furthermore, Kuti explained that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project will be finished before the general elections. Additionally, personnel will work swiftly throughout the dry season.

He continued, “We will resume construction on the Lagos-Ibadan road in early January. The job will proceed more quickly than it did previously because it is the dry season. All hands are on deck, and work is still being done.  And we’ll complete it during this dry spell. In particular, I am confident that before the end of February or the beginning of March, or around the time of the election, we should be able to finish cleaning up.”
