DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project Maintains Operations Growth After 2022 Upgrade

Home » Transport » Airports » DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project Maintains Operations Growth After 2022 Upgrade

The DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project continues supporting operational growth at Dubai International Airport as passenger traffic rises across the UAE aviation sector in 2026. Dubai Airports completed the major runway rehabilitation program in June 2022, and the upgraded infrastructure now plays a central role in handling increasing aircraft movements, improving runway safety systems, and supporting long-term aviation capacity growth at one of the world’s busiest international airports.

The rehabilitation works covered the resurfacing of the 4.5km northern runway, reinforcement of taxiways, installation of upgraded LED airfield lighting systems, modernization of navigational aids, and replacement of meteorological equipment. More than 3,800 personnel and 400 engineers participated in the fast-tracked infrastructure program during the 45-day construction window between May and June 2022.

Dubai Airports completed the project on schedule before the peak summer travel season. The airport operator confirmed that the upgraded runway improved operational efficiency, safety performance, and future passenger handling capacity across the airport network.

In 2026, Dubai International Airport continues scaling operations after regional airspace disruptions earlier this year. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths recently confirmed that DXB and Al Maktoum International Airport handled more than six million passengers, over 32,000 aircraft movements, and more than 213,000 metric tons of cargo during the disruption period. The operator also stated that travel demand through Dubai remains strong despite temporary operational challenges.

DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project supports wider aviation infrastructure strategy

The runway modernization project also aligns with Dubai’s wider aviation infrastructure strategy, including future growth at Al Maktoum International Airport and expanded multimodal transport integration across the emirate.

The project reflects broader aviation expansion trends across the Gulf region, including the recently announced Jeddah airport expansion plans involving Jeddah Airports Company and Singapore’s Surbana Jurong Group. The Saudi project aims to increase passenger capacity, strengthen cargo infrastructure, and connect Jeddah to 150 global destinations by 2030 as regional airports compete to expand global transit operations.

DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project Supports Long-Term Aviation Capacity

The DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project remains one of Dubai Airports’ major infrastructure upgrades completed during the post-pandemic aviation recovery phase. The program focused on extending runway lifespan while improving operational readiness for growing passenger and cargo volumes.

Construction teams resurfaced the entire runway and reinforced critical taxiway exits and entries to accommodate heavy aircraft traffic. Engineers also upgraded more than 4,200 LED airfield lights while relocating navigational aid substations and modernizing safety systems.

During the closure period, Dubai World Central Airport handled more than 1,000 flights weekly to reduce passenger disruption. Airlines including flydubai, SpiceJet, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, and IndiGo temporarily shifted operations to the secondary airport.

Industry observers believe the runway upgrade continues strengthening DXB’s operational resilience as Dubai expands its role as a global aviation and logistics hub.

Current Status of the DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project in 2026

The DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project is fully completed and operational in 2026. Dubai International Airport continues using the upgraded runway infrastructure to support growing traffic volumes and maintain dual-runway operations efficiently.

DXB handled 18.6 million passengers during the first quarter of 2026 despite temporary regional airspace disruptions earlier this year. Dubai Airports expects passenger demand to continue increasing as airline capacity gradually returns to normal levels.

Meanwhile, Dubai continues preparing long-term aviation expansion programs linked to Al Maktoum International Airport. Authorities expect future airport developments to support increasing passenger volumes, cargo growth, and multimodal connectivity across the UAE aviation sector.

DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project, Dubai, Set to Begin

Dubai Airport has confirmed the closure of the DXB northern runway in plans for the implementation of a rehabilitation project, scheduled between May 9th and June 22nd, a 45-day period.

The DXB northern runway rehabilitation project will reportedly involve the placement of well over 30,000 m3 of concrete and 160,000 tonnes of asphalt to strengthen and resurface the adjacent taxiways as well as the runway. The project will also replace some 264 kilometers of secondary cables and approximately 4,400 runway lights will be upgraded to economic, environmentally friendly, and modern technology.

Plans to minimize passenger disruptions as the DXB northern runway rehabilitation project continues

As the DXB northern runway remains closed, several flights will be redirected to Dubai’s second airport, Dubai World Central (DWC) in an effort towards limiting the impact on service that will be present during the 45-day closure period. DWC will handle more than 1000 flights per week during the closure period with a huge majority of the flights being operated by Spice Jet, Gulf Air, flydubai, and Indigo. In addition to ensuring a smooth transition, DWC has set to re-open its guest experience and service touchpoints.

Dubai Airports also ensured to give advance notice to all airlines to plan for flight reductions as well as schedule their planning accordingly. The CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, stated that the planning of the Dubai Airports northern runway rehabilitation project was carefully coordinated to minimize disruption to passengers, while still ensuring that the highest safety and guest experience standards at both airports were upheld.

DXB’s Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project in UAE Nears Completion

The Dubai International Airport (DXB)’s Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project whose objective is to enhance the operational efficiency, capacity, and safety of the runway alongside all of its supporting systems is reportedly nearing completion.

According to Dubai Airports Company, the airport authority that owns and manages airports in Dubai, the project has surpassed its scheduled midway point and it is projected to re-open this year, more specifically by June 22.

Scope of the DXB’s Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project

In a statement, the airport’s operator revealed the essential work for the project includes the strengthening of the wider runway strip and reinforcing the paving on key taxiway exits as well as entries. The works also feature the resurfacing of the entire 4.5-kilometer-long runway and the repairing of drainage infrastructure.

In addition to the aforementioned works, the meteorological equipment is also going to be replaced as well as the aeronautical ground lighting and navigational aids. The airport’s operator also revealed that the navigation aids substation is going to be relocated as the Southern runway continues to be operational.

In an effort to stay on track with the works more than 3,000 people, and 1,000 vehicles have been deployed onsite.
