Latrobe Valley Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) reached full operational status in September 2025, marking a significant milestone in Victoria’s transition from coal-based generation to a renewable-led grid. Developed by Tilt Renewables, the 100 MW/200 MWh facility is now actively supporting the National Electricity Market (NEM) by storing excess renewable energy and dispatching it during peak demand periods. Latrobe Valley BESS is located adjacent to the Morwell Terminal Station, and has quickly become a key grid asset through enhancing reliability and enabling higher penetration of solar and wind generation across the state. Another power station-colocated battery installation in Victoria, Elaine BESS is also set to join Latrobe soon as construction continues to mark progress.

What makes the Latrobe Valley Battery Storage Project Significant

Latrobe Valley BESS particularly significant through its symbolic and functional role in transforming a legacy coal region into a clean energy hub. The project:

Latrobe Valley BESS Project: Fluence to build its second battery project in Victoria

Reported September 19, 2023 – In a significant stride towards bolstering Victoria’s renewable energy infrastructure. Fluence, a global energy storage giant, will build its second significant battery project in the heart of Victoria’s coal country. This endeavour involves the development of a 100MW, two-hour Latrobe Valley Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Under a 20-year long-term service agreement, Tilt has selected Fluence to oversee the construction, servicing, and maintenance of the 100MW/200MWh BESS project. This partnership will utilize Fluence’s state-of-the-art Gridstack grid-scale battery storage solution, driven by its AI-powered bidding software, Mosaic, and asset performance management software, Nispera. These cutting-edge technologies will enable the optimization of market trading and operational efficiency.

Energizing Victoria: The Battery Storage System Breakthrough

Victoria is rapidly expanding its energy storage capacity to achieve its ambitious 95% renewable target by 2035. To replace retiring coal generators, including Yallourn in 2028, Victoria must invest heavily in new wind, solar, and energy storage. Consequently, this will help meet its renewable energy goals.

According to Lily D’Ambrosio, the state’s energy minister, “The Latrobe Valley BESS will be critical to strengthening our renewable energy grid and ensuring we make the most of our renewable generation when it is abundant and cheap.”

As part of its renewable energy and offshore wind objectives, the Andrews Labor government aims to install 2.6 GW of storage capacity by 2030, increasing to 6.3 GW by 2035. Tilt Renewables, in collaboration with AusNet, plans to utilize the Latrobe Valley BESS to store excess power during periods of surplus supply, such as weekends, and release it during peak demand, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply during the ongoing energy transition.

Interim CEO Steve Symons highlighted the significance of such projects, stating, “It is projects like these, in tandem with other renewable investments, that will help all Victorians continue to enjoy reliable power during the energy transition.”

Finally he concluded by commending Fluence’s expertise in delivering dependable energy storage solutions, supporting the transition to renewables in Victoria and Australia.
