You may be a small consulting or construction firm but you have no doubt heard the talk that is on every leaders plate. Everybody today is talking about how important effective leadership is in a team environment. I mean, how are you going to get your office staff to work in synch and at an optimum level? Everyone is looking for the magic key. You’ve done your bit. You take them for team building activities and give them pep talks but it only does so much. But have you ever taken a pause and thought that In football, when a team keeps performing poorly it ends up being the team manager who gets the sack? In your office perhaps its time for you to shape up and stop blaming the team as hard as that may sound. So here are 5 things to take a close at first before you give yourself the red card.
Firstly take a long hard look at yourself and assess your strengths and weaknesses and how this affects your team members. Only by self reflection can you begin to start improving yourself. Secondly become more disciplined and tone down any disruptive emotions you exhibit. Don’t keep letting your emotions get the better of you. It may make you feel good but you loose big time in terms of trust. Maintain your cool and never panic. Thirdly be more empathetic. This somehow goes against the grain for the one fixated on the image of a tough no nonsense boss. You’ll get to realize that showing some compassion can go a long way in building your team. Fourthly you need to work on your relationships. It takes time and often its in short supply but by doing so you will be able to steer your team well. Lastly communicate. Without clear communication you leave the door wide open for misinterpretation and don’t forget your actions speak much louder than your words.
