So you want to build on a swamp

The decision to build on a swamp is usually the very last when it comes to construction-if at all. This is because of the wet conditions that make it ten times harder than any other terrain.  As a result, many people will make sure they avoid these areas. However, in a situation where that marshy piece of land is more convenient and really the last option, you will need to know how to go about it.

Soil Investigation

Any effective swamp construction is highly dependent of soil investigation. Once this is done, you will be able to determine on the way forward. The soil can either be removed entirely or strengthened, based on its properties.

Foundation

First things first, you have to ensure that the foundation is set on sound soil. This will help in even weight distribution once the structure is complete. One of the ways of accomplishing this would be filling the land with sand for it to be firm. Next, it is advisable to use a raft foundation. This is composed of a surface of reinforced concrete slab.

On the other hand, in cases where the swamp is too deep a foundation made of strong material such as concrete pushed into the ground to support structures built on top would be more appropriate.

The future road levels around the area will also determine the level of the foundation, especially with regards to drainage.

Adaptive measures

Taking consideration the water in the area, the developer should use water resisting materials. These will help prevent dampness in the walls. Furthermore, materials from clay or soil should also be avoided when filling water logged areas. This is because when the water dries up the clay will cause cracks in the building due to shrinking.

When it comes to construction of a perimeter wall, concrete should be used on the lower part above the proper floor level. The paint should as well be of high quality to prevent moisture on the building.
