Meta to Power U.S. Data Center Operations with 80 MW Walker Solar Project in Pennsylvania

MN8 Energy has won a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Meta Platforms Inc. to supply 100% of electricity generated from its new 80 MW Walker Solar project in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. This, the duo notes, is in a bid to support Meta’s data center operations with renewable energy and strengthen the company’s corporate clean-energy strategy in the United States.

Overview on Walker Solar Project

Location: Juniata County, Pennsylvania

Developer: MN8 Energy LLC

Offtaker: Meta Platforms Inc.

Type: Solar PV plus corporate PPA for data center reliability

Capacity: 80 MW of renewable electricity

Status: Underway with a signed long-term PPA

MN8 Energy will deliver utility-scale solar generation into the PJM Interconnection grid. Meta will then match its data center load with 100% renewable output from Walker Solar through the PPA.

Financial Structure Behind Walker Solar Project PPA by Meta and MN8 Energy

The project is structured under a long-term PPA with Meta, pointing toward the growing trend of corporate renewable procurement in the U.S., where technology companies secure supply contracts to match their increasing data center loads with clean energy.

Agreements like these typically involve contracting for future generation via solar assets built and operated by independent power producers (IPPs) such as MN8 Energy. The renewable energy assets can also be presented as hybrids where wind, solar and battery storage can be combined as seen with Google’s first data center in Minnesota.

What Walker Solar Project PPA Means for Meta and MN8 Energy

The 80 MW Walker Solar project in Pennsylvania by MN8 Energy also broadens the portfolio of corporate PPAs in the U.S. The project is also enabling hyperscale data center operators like Meta reduce their carbon footprint and match their growing electricity loads with renewable generation.

Additionally, Meta’s purchase is in line with its goal of powering global operations with clean energy. The Meta-MN8 PPA deal from Walker Solar project also builds on other deals by the tech giant in the U.S. such as ENGIE’s expanded PPA portfolio exceeding 1.3 GW of contracted renewable capacity.
