Microsoft has agreed to rent out its Crusoe data center campus that was originally being developed by Oracle and OpenAI. The campus represents about 700 megawatts of capacity and is located in Abenile. Moreover, it is adjacent to Oracle’s and OpenAI’s flagship Stargate campus. Microsoft struck the deal with developer Crusoe after the two companies walked away from talks to occupy the site.
The world’s largest software maker has stepped up data-center leasing in an attempt to meet demand for its cloud-computing customers. Moreover, it aims to use the data centers to support its internal work for artificial intelligence.
The firm has inked about $50 billion in commitments to lease server farms under developments in its most recent quarter. The flurry of activity marks a reversal from about this time last year. The company had hit a pause on many of its data center projects. The campus will benefit from energy projects under development in Texas such as the NextEra gas-fired power plant. The project is aimed at providing power to run data centers across various regions in the state.
Scope on Recent Developments on the Microsoft Crusoe Data Center Campus
Reports had emerged that negotiations for Oracle and OpenAI to occupy the facilities on the Abilene site had dragged over financing. Moreover, OpenAI’s often-changing needs were also taken into account before discussions fell apart.
However, Oracle had refuted claims that it had abandoned discussions and noted that it was still committed to deliver its projects. The recent developments come as an interjection to this claims with Microsoft inking an agreement for the Crusoe data center campus. Meta Platforms Inc. also discussed renting the site, and The Information earlier reported that Microsoft, too, was in talks to lease it.
Crusoe, Microsoft, and Meta all declined to comment. The Abilene site is among the highest-profile of the AI era, and will now feature two rivals. Both Oracle and Microsoft will be on the same great campus. However, Oracle has been rapidly filling buildings there with servers, which are used by OpenAI to train and deploy its products. Technology companies have been pouring billions of dollars into data centers to power generative AI services. These include ChatGPT and also Copilot, which require huge amounts of computing power.
