New Era Energy & Digital has teamed up with Primary Digital Infrastructure on the development of a 1+ gigawatt hyperscale data center campus in West Texas.
The project, called Texas Critical Data Centers (TCDC), will be a campus of over a gigawatt in the county of Ector, in the vicinity of Odessa. According to the developers of the project, the facility will be designed in such a way that it will be able to handle the computing demands of the future in the fields of hyperscale computing and artificial intelligence.
New Era Energy & Digital and Primary Digital Infrastructure will co-sponsor the development under the agreement. Primary Digital Infrastructure will serve as lead capital partner and handle capital structuring and tenant engagement.
The companies are pursuing a hyperscale anchor tenant for the project’s initial phase, but they did not disclose any customer commitments or construction schedules. They also did not release the financial plans for TCDC.
Primary Digital Infrastructure has recently increased its footprint in the Texas data center market. The company is a partner in the Stargate program, a $15 billion joint venture with Crusoe Energy Systems and Blue Owl Capital to build a 1.2-gigawatt AI-driven data center campus in Abilene, Texas. The project has raised over $11.6 billion in debt and equity financing, as disclosed in previous announcements.
The hyperscale market has increasingly focused on Texas and other areas where there is abundant power supply, due to the need for large and flexible power resources and scalable land to host AI and cloud computing infrastructure.
West Texas Boom
West Texas has emerged as a hotspot for both data center and energy development, driven by abundant power, favorable grid conditions, and ample land for large-scale campuses. Galaxy Digital recently secured ERCOT approval to add 830 MW of capacity at its Helios AI Data Center, marking another major expansion in the region this month. With projects like Texas Critical Data Centers and Helios advancing, West Texas continues to attract hyperscale and AI-focused developments that leverage the region’s energy resources and infrastructure.
