The groundbreaking date for a 1.2 GW solar plant in Serbia built by Hyundai Engineering has been set for early next year. Official reports from the 24th of January outline various details of the project which Hyundai Engineering secured last October. The details include the cost of the project which has been estimated at US$1.6 billion. Additionally, officials from the Ministry of Mining and Energy stated that they expect the project to be completed by 2028. Associated battery energy storage systems will be constructed alongside the solar power plant.

Details on the Hyundai Engineering Solar Plant in Serbia
Once the project is completed, the plant will be handed over to Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), the state-owned power utility. The entire solar facility will consist of six solar power plants. It will be located in the southern region of the country. Further, details on the battery energy storage systems (BESS) outline that they will be capable of 200 MW of operational power and a maximum capacity of 400 MWh.

Impact of the Solar facility in Serbia
“This is one of the largest renewable energy projects in Europe and a key initiative for Serbia’s energy system,” said Dubravka Đedović Handanović, Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy. “It will enable more green energy in our system, which is of exceptional importance for companies and citizens as well as for improving the security of supply. Thanks to this project, Elektroprivreda Srbije will get the biggest renewable energy production capacity. It will further strengthen its position as the key green energy producer.”

Furthermore, a consortium will be formed with Hyundai Engineering collaborating with UGT Renewables, a company based in the United States, in order for the project to be brought to life.
