The 1,125 MW Hanbando fixed-bottom offshore wind farm is one step closer to construction following an Electric Business Licence that was obtained by Ocean Winds. Located in South Korea, the project is now set to begin the Environmental Impact Assessment and other key permits. Additionally, site investigations will be conducted and major engineering studies will begin as well. The Electricity Regulatory Commission of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) granted the licence on Friday this week. It gives the offshore wind project exclusive development rights over the offshore space and reserves interconnection capacity.

More on Ocean Winds and the Hanbando Offshore Wind Farm
The developers, Ocean Winds, are a joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hyundai Steel last year to cooperate on the Hanbando offshore wind energy project. It is located 120 kilometers off the coast of Incheon. Furthermore, the project will strengthen the JV’s contribution to the South Korean government’s renewable energy deployment target. The government outlined their plans to achieve 125.9 GW of renewable energy by 2038. As for Ocean Winds, they have stated their plans to contribute to Incheon Metropolitan City’s goal of developing 6.2 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.

“In recent weeks we have seen substantial progress on offshore wind energy in South Korea. With the publication of the 11th Basic Energy Plan there has been an increase in the country’s long-term renewable energy goals. The passage of the Special Law on Offshore Wind Energy has also brought this about,” said Guzman Figar, Country Director for Ocean Winds in South Korea. “At OW, we believe that our Hanbando project, which connects directly to the Seoul-Incheon metropolitan area, one of the largest load hubs in the world, will play a key role in helping South Korea achieve these goals.”
