Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has officially flagged off the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium Construction works in Lira City. This stadium project has been in works for quite a number of years.
“The reason this stadium was delayed is because we didn’t put it in mind, rates it is because we had no choice but to survive,” Museveni elaborated at the ceremony that was attended by the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni. Also in attendance at the ceremony were other dignitaries.

Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium Construction Cost
Furthermore, the stadium is expected to cost $129 million and it will be completed within a period of 20 months. This upcoming stadium is named after the first Olympic gold medalist of Uganda, John Akii Bua.
Facilities at the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium
This upcoming stadium will contain a range of facilities. These include a 20,000-seat multi-sport indoor stadium and a semi-Olympic swimming pool. Additionally, the stadium will also consist of outdoor courts for basketball, netball, badminton, and volleyball. There will also be a packing facility with a capacity to contain 1,000 vehicles.
Supplementing the stadium project, there will be roads, utilities, ICT systems, sewerage treatment unit, landscaping works, perimeter fencing, and lastly security systems.

Additionally, others facilities will be constructed which are inclusive of a fully furnished clubhouse and for stadium operations and a 60-room hostel. There will also be five sports pitches and a borehole that will be utilised for reducing water maintenance costs.
The mayor of Lira city Sam Atul thanked the government for the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium project. He revealed thatprojec will boost the economic transformation in the region as a whole.
