The 3 year construction of the new $200 million Protective Life Stadium project has finally been rounded up with the installation of a sign lightning. The culmination of this project was celebrated recently and the Project partners flipped the switch during the unveiling event. The  Governor, Kay Ivey and Birmingham Mayor, Randall Woodfin also graced the occasion.

This new Protective Life Stadium will serve as the homebase of the UAB Blazer football team and is set to open on October 2nd, which marks this season’s opening match between UAB Blazer and Liberty University.  According to Tad Snider, BJCC Executive Director, the multi-purpose 45,000 capacity stadium will host several concerts during spring next year and also the World Games’ opening and closing ceremonies scheduled for July 2022.

Nick Sellers, the World Games 2022 CEO, stated that the new signage of the Protective Life Stadium marks the  countdown  to the Opening Ceremony for The World Games 2022 and he also stated that this new development brings the entire World Games family another step closer to welcoming the world to this state-of-the-art facility in 2022. Sellers said, “It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for thousands of fans, the 3,600 competing athletes, the city of Birmingham and the state of Alabama.”

Several of Birmingham’s State and City leaders were in agreement that the new Protective Life Stadium would be a catalyst for economic growth. Randall Woodfin, the Birmingham Mayor, pointed out that the venue was a necessary investment not just in terms of promoting tourism and attracting more visitors, but also as a way of supporting citizens within the city. 

Governor Kay Ivey, also commended the new development, stating that Briminham’s future would be brighter with the Protective Stadium, which would attract an increased number of opportunities ranging from entertainment and sporting events, such as UAB Football the World Games.

The Mayor, Woodfin also spoke on the economic growth and development the new Protective Life Stadium would bring to the city and he pointed out that there was no need to chase after other cities like Austin or Nashville. Woodfin said. “It’s more important to be the best version of ourselves.”
