Colbún SA has broken ground on the Celda Solar storage project, a US$260 million facility located in Camarones, Chile. The facility, supported by Tesla, will have a capacity of 228 MW, guaranteeing a continuous supply for four hours with a total of 912 MWh. The electric car manufacturer has supplied the batteries for the project, known as Megapack. Each Megapack has the capacity to store over 3.9 MWh of energy. This is enough to supply an average of 3,600 homes in the area for one hour. Colbún Solar is constructing the project that covers a total of ten hectares.

Details on the Celda Solar Battery Project in Chile

Located on the property will be battery facilities, support buildings and an electric substation. The substation, named “SE Chaca” will have a 220 kV high-voltage line that will stretch 3.5 kilometres long. It will be connected to the existing sectioning substation known as “SE Roncacho” which is owned by Engie Energía Chile SA. The transmission system will play the role of integrating the energy stores in the batteries into the national electricity grid. Furthermore, it will contribute to the stability and security of the energy supply. The project is expected to begin operations in mid-2026.
