Angola is set to be home to a new 35 MWp Quilemba Solar Photovoltaic Plant in Quilemba, a town, and commune in the province of Huíla.

This came into the light following the announcement of the signing of a partnership agreement between Total Eren, a French Independent Power Producer (IPP), Sonangol Group, the parastatal that oversees petroleum and natural gas production in Angola, and Angola Environment Technology (Greentech) to establish the future Quilemba solar photovoltaic plant.

Ownership of the future Quilemba Solar Photovoltaic Plant

As per the agreement reached between the three parties, Quilemba Solar will be 51% owned by Total Eren, 30% by Sonangol, and 19% by Greentech.

The partnership according to a joint statement by the three companies “is essential for the completion, development, and implementation of the project that once complete and when it starts operating will allow significant savings in liquid fuel compared to existing thermal power plants.”

“The plant will also increase the production capacity of clean energy in the south of Angola, in line with the central African country’s strong ambition for the renewable energy sector,” adds the note.

Implication and remarks on the signing of the agreement

The signing of this agreement according to the joint statement represents, on the one hand, the strengthening of the partnership with TotalEnergies in Angola and Greentech, and, on the other, Sonangol’s commitment to the energy transition in the country and to environmental concerns and energy sustainability.

“We are very delighted to welcome Sonangol to the Quilemba Solar project, which we are developing with our partner Greentech in Angola and we believe that we can work together more effectively to deliver low-carbon, renewable and competitive electricity to the Angolan people,” said Fabienne Demol, Executive Vice President of Total Eren.

Jorge Salvador, executive and co-founder of Greentech, on the other hand, said that “having Sonangol in the Quilemba Solar project will create additional synergies in the joint development and will be an additional force to accelerate energy transition efforts in Angola”.
