In what is in accordance to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with an aim of enhancing the road infrastructure of Dubai so as to meet the rapidly growing population transport needs, the Roads Transport Authority has awarded the Al Fay Street Development contract.

This development project extends from its intersection with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. It also passes through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street all the way to Emirates Road. This Al Fay Street development project is expected to cost AED1.5 billion.

Scope of the Project

The scope of the Al Fay Street development project includes development of five major intersections. Additionally, it will also feature 13.5 kilometres of bridges and 12.9 kilometres of roads. Once the project is complete, it will enhance the Al Fay Street capacity to be able to accommodate up to 64,400 vehicles per hour.

Furthermore, the project be serving both residential and developmental areas therefore being beneficial to a population of 60,000 including visitors. The development of Al Fay Street is quite a crucial infrastructure development project in Dubai’s road network.

Furthermore, this development project will enhance the traffic efficiency and capacity at five major intersections. This will therefore cement the status of Dubai as a giant in both advanced and sustainable infrastructure.

Al Fay Street Development Intersections

1. First intersection

As for the first intersection, a bridge will be built at the intersection of Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. This bridge will include two lanes spanning 1.25 kilometres. Additionally, it will possess a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour so as to be able to accommodate the left-turn traffic from Deira along Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road heading to Al Fay Street and Emirates Road.

Furthermore, this project also includes expanding service roads in either directions. This will enable the increase of traffic capacity and also improve the flow of traffic at the intersection.

Moreover, two bridges with two lanes each will also be set up spanning 2.04 kilometres and a combined capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour in either directions. These bridges will facilitate the traffic coming from Jumeirah Village Circle, linking it with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road.

2. Second and Third Intersections

The second intersection will be built at the current roundabout that is located between the Dubai Sports City and Dubai Production City. This will entail building a bridge over Al Fay Street. This bridge will span a distance of 960 meters. Furthermore, it will consist of four lanes in each direction and have a capacity of 14,400 vehicles per hour. This will ensure that there will be smooth flow of traffic along Al Fay Street.

This will also entail the conversion of the existing roundabout into a signal-controlled surface intersection. The work will be done in order to be able to accommodate the traffic volumes to and from Dubai Sports City and Dubai Production City. A road spanning 780 metres with two lanes. This is expected to facilitate the movement of traffic from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road heading to Emirates Road. It will possess a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.

Additionally, a brand new intersection will be built at Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street with Al Fay Street. It will consist of a three-lane bridge in either direction spanning 1.4 kilometres. This bridge will have the capacity of accommodating 9,600 vehicles per hour.

Furthermore, this project will be inclusive of two-grade separated service roads. Each of the roads will have three lanes in either directions, designed to facilitate the left-turn movements. The service roads will be 1.4 kilometres long. They will possess a combined capacity of 9,600 vehicles per hour for both of the bridges.

3. Fourth and Fifth Intersections

For the fourth Intersection, a two-lane bridge will be built. This will be for facilitating left-turn traffic from Al-Fay Street on to Emirates Road. This bridge will span a distance of 1 kilometre and have a the capacity to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour.

As for the fifth intersection, there will be the construction of two bridges each with two lanes. The bridges will span a total distance of 2.25 kilometers and possess a combined capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour. This development will provide direct access from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road to Dubai Production City.
