Development plans for the Nucor steel galvanizing line project

The new Nucor steel galvanizing line will be designed to produce flat-rolled products, with a 500,000-ton annual capacity. Additionally, the developers said the new line would be able to produce galvanized steel that’s about 72 inches wide. Construction on the project is expected to reach completion by mid-2025.

Upon completion, the Nucor steel galvanizing line project will create over 50 new full-time jobs in South Carolina. The Berkeley County mill currently has about 975 employees therefore, the state has offered Nucor job development credits. Furthermore, the Coordinating Council for Economic Development has also approved a $400,000 grant to assist with the project’s site preparations. The developers have also signed a contract with Berkeley County on a fee-in-lieu of the tax agreement.

Nucor Steel Berkeley’s V.P, Mike Lee, was grateful to the state, county, and Santee Cooper for their support. He said the steel galvanizing line would further expand their capabilities and also enable them to serve customers better.

Nucor’s President and CEO, Leon Topalian, was also excited about the new expansion project. According to Topalian, this investment supports the company’s strategy of shifting its product mix to higher margin value-added products. Therefore, he said it would enable them to incorporate sustainability trends that can drive opportunities for Nucor. The company also recently approved the development of a new galvanizing line in the western U.S.
