Egypt has just seen Abydos 1 Solar Plant Inaugurated in the southern city of Aswan. This inauguration took place on Saturday. This solar project was constructed at a cost of $440 million. Currently this solar project is the largest in Egypt.
This project is a part of the countryโs push to boost its general renewable energy production after the severe power outages that were experienced last summer.

Developer of the Project
The Abydos 1 Solar Plant was developed by AMEA power. This solar PV plant project has an impressive capacity of 500MW. Additionally, just to note, it was developed within a period of 18 months.
Furthermore, this solar plant is expected to have the capacity of generating 1,500 gigawatt-hours of clean energy every year. This energy will be enough to power approximately 300,000 households while at the same time offsetting 782, 300 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This was revealed by AMEA power.
Significance of the Project
This solar plant is expected to accelerate the green power strategy of Egypt and also help the country deal with the power shortages that were experienced over the previous year. Additionally, the first electricity from the plant was delivered to the national grid the previous week.
Moreover, the Abydos Solar PV Plant project was financed by the International Finance Corporation, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Additionally, on the same Saturday, the Egyptian government also got to sign both a power purchase and land agreement. This was signed with AMEA power and will foresee an additional 500MW wind power project. This wind project will cost $600 million and will be located in Ras Shukeir, northern part of Hurghada in the Red sea.
