A $5 million DoubleTree hotel renovation project was recently completed in East Memphis. According to Cooper Hotels, the owners, this project was executed in several phases, in order to make good use of the hotel’s low occupancy period during the Covid pandemic, and it was also managed to ensure that guests and event attendees, who returned during the final months of work were not inconvenienced.
The planning and design phase of the DoubleTree hotel renovation project had been in progress several months before the physical renovations, which started in January 2020 and most of the major modifications took about 19 months to reach completion. The general manager of DoubleTree, Candace Selecman, gave more details on the project’s successful execution. Selecman explained that they had been fortunate enough to complete most of the renovation work, before the supply chain and labor issues arose during the Covid pandemic.

At the time of the DoubleTree hotel renovation, there was a reduced number of guests due to the pandemic; this gave the developers an opportunity to carry out a massive makeover, which began with upgrades to the guest rooms. These initial upgrades were finally completed in April 2021 and they covered the replacement of all furniture, amenities, carpets and wall coverings in the rooms. The improvements also included replacing the Bathroom doors, with space-efficient entryway barn doors, as well as a complete overhaul of all the corridors and elevator lobbies of the hotel.
DoubleTree hotel renovation included the creation of a private patio for public gatherings
A 6,000-square-foot meeting and event space was also worked on, as part of the DoubleTree hotel renovation project. This portion of the project started in January 2020 and was completed after six weeks. It covered several new additions which include the rug, wall coverings, and new LED installations and lighting in the hotel’s ballroom and foyer. In addition, a 1,600 square-foot, private patio was built, in response to the public’s increased interest in outdoor functions and gatherings. The patio was designed with intricate stamped concrete flooring, new landscaping, new furniture and a fire pit.
The last phase of the DoubleTree hotel renovation project, which started in late June, focused on the demolition of the hotel’s restaurant and bar to make way for a new restaurant called Erling Jensen Small Bites with Topgolf Swing Suites, and this new restaurant was opened in October. Selecman was positive that all the renovations made on the DoubleTree hotel would make it a choice location for visitors coming into the Memphis area.
