Construction has broken ground on what will be one of the largest stadiums in the world, the Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane, Morocco. Aiming for completion in 2027, the stadium will seat 115,000 football fans in the 2030 World Cup. The country has a strong history with football and will also host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025. Other cities in the country that will host the World Cup include Marrakech, Agadir and Fez. What’s more, the 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The last time multiple countries hosted the World Cup was in 2002 when Korea and Japan shared the honour. Furthermore, in 2026, the World Cup will be hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Project Cost
The Hassan II Stadium will be constructed at a cost of U$500 million which will be allocated over the period from 2025 to 2028. Funding was allocated by the Moroccan government and the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion who signed a 5 billion dirham agreement in October 2023. Additionally, Populous and Tarik Oualalou Architecte (Oualalou + Choi) were selected to design the stadium in March last year. This was after a competition was held for the Grand Stade de Casablanca.

Stade Mohammed V will be replaced by the Hassan II Stadium as the home of the largest clubs in Morocco, Raja CA and Wydad AC. Moreover, the stadium, located just outside of Casablanca, will behome of the Morocco national football team. The president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, also shred that there are planned upgrades and expansions of the Rabat and Tangier stadiums. They are expected to be completed by the first quarter of the year.
