A $72.2 million expansion of the FedEx Air Cargo Hub was recently completed at the Miami International Airport (MIA). This project has expanded the Airport’s main sorting facility by an additional 138,000 square feet, which increases the total size to over 282,000 square feet. The Cargo hub expansion project is intended to help FedEx accelerate its international operations and also fast track the customs clearance process.
FedEx Air Cargo Hub expansion adds new customs clearance area and cold chain facilityÂ
The FedEx Air Cargo Hub expansion project was designed to enhance the company’s sorting capabilities and ensure its increased capacity. The new additions to the sorting facility include a customs clearance area and a 70,000-square-foot cold chain facility; this cold chain facility is the largest one of all in FedEx’s network and it consists of several rooms which are designed to maintain temperatures between the ranges of 13 degrees to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. These rooms will facilitate transportation of perishables, such as flowers, food and pharmaceuticals.

The regional president of the Americas and EVP of global support, Richard Smith gave more insights on the company’s vision. Smith explained that expansion of the FedEx Air Cargo Hub in Miami, would place their company in a better position to meet the growing demand of their customers and also efficiently handle increased e-commerce volumes by using their vast network. He also stated that FedEx Express is pleased to be one of the biggest air freight transporters operating from within the Miami International Airport, and this newly completed expansion project shows the company’s commitment to serving South Florida, Latin America, and the world at large.
According to the Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, hundreds of employment opportunities for Miami-Dade residents are expected to be created at the Cargo Hub during the peak season; including growth opportunities for local businesses in the area. She pointed out that the FedEx Air Cargo Hub expansion at MIA would continue to boost international trade and e-commerce in Miami-Dade, especially before the busy holiday shipping season. The Mayor said she was certain that this development would position Miami-Dade County as a leader of cargo services in the entire nation and the world.
