An $86 million contract has been signed for the construction of the Sunrise Wind Offshore project by Orsted of Denmark and Eversource Energy. The companies are planning on building a big wind farm off the Long Island coast, about 140 miles north of New York City; they will be working in collaboration with the Riggs Distler & Co. construction firm to build the wind turbine parts near Albany and then take them across the Hudson River.
The Sunrise Wind Offshore Project will be developed on a 400-acre site at the Hudson River Port in Coeymans, which is 30 miles east of Montauk on Long Island. It will be constructed as a concrete platform, featuring a 400 feet wharf or dock space capable of handling parts weighing up to 120 tons. This Wind project is expected to create up to 230 jobs in upstate New York and will consist of 122 turbines, with steel ladders and railings for wind turbine generators. The Port of Coeymans was chosen as the central location for foundation construction, welding, and assembly of parts.

The Sunrise Wind Offshore project is expected to generate up to 924 megawatts of electricity, which is in line with the plans of New York state to generate at least 9 gigawatts of power by 2035; attain zero-emission electricity by 2040; and provide power to more than 4 million homes. The proposed date for this power generation scheme is set for 2025.
Riggs Distler & Co and Smulders, a steel company based in Belgium were selected as the general contractors for the Sunrise Wind Offshore project. While Riggs Distler will build prefabricated wind tower foundation parts near Albany and ship them down to the Hudson River for installation at the Sunrise Wind project.
Senator Kevin Parker commended the new development and he said, “As Chair of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, I am enthusiastic that the State’s Sunrise Wind offshore wind project will have the opportunity to grow. This initiative will significantly increase our overall pool of renewable energy options, while creating green collar jobs for New York State residents.
The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochu also said the Sunrise Offshore Wind project will emphasize New York’s position as a national hub for offshore wind.
Thanks for the input Ric
The writing here isn’t very clear, but the title caught my eye.
“The companies are planning on building a big wind farm off the Long Island coast, about 140 miles north of New York City”
Google Maps suggests that 140 miles north of NYC is Albany, generally not regarded as a coastal resort.
My guess is that manufacturing will be done there “and then take them across the Hudson River” means barged down river.
Yeah, this is more clear, albeit an incomplete sentence: “While Riggs Distler will build prefabricated wind tower foundation parts near Albany and ship them down to the Hudson River for installation at the Sunrise Wind project.”
