Arevon has officially started construction on its Nighthawk Energy Storage Project, a major utility-scale battery storage development in Poway, California. This $600 million project will deliver 300 megawatts (MW) of power with 1,200 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, supporting grid stability during peak demand and supplying enough energy to power around 385,000 homes for four hours daily.
The Nigthhawk Energy Storage project joins a list of other BESS projects under development in California chief amongst them being the largest in the world the Darden Clean Energy Project that recently got approval from the California Energy Commission (CEC).
Local Construction and Economic Impact
California-headquartered Rosendin is leading the construction for Arevon. At peak, the project will employ over 130 workers, generating significant economic activity for Poway’s local businesses, including suppliers, restaurants, and accommodation providers.
The build will also inject over $30 million in local payments to San Diego County and nearby communities throughout the project’s life. The City of Poway alone is projected to receive about $12 million, which will help improve local infrastructure and community services.
Grid Connection and Technology
The energy storage system will connect to the grid via the Sycamore Canyon Substation on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, distributing power to the wider San Diego region. The project will utilize advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries, known for safety and reliability — a key concern for contractors, operators, and surrounding communities.
Community Collaboration and Safety Measures
Arevon is working closely with the Poway Fire Department to ensure robust safety measures are in place during construction and operation. Additional community benefits include the establishment of a $2 million community fund for public projects and partnerships with local organizations supporting safety, youth programs, and regional events.
