Avangrid, the North American subsidiary of Spanish utility Iberdrola, has announced that its 238 MWac (321 MWdc) True North Solar project in Falls County, Texas, has commenced commercial operations. The project is supported by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Meta, signed in March 2023, ensuring that the energy produced will power Meta’s regional operations, including its upcoming data center in Temple, Texas. Additionally, True North will supply electricity to the Texas grid, enhancing overall reliability. Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra highlighted the project’s significance, noting that with the projected increase in data center construction and energy demand, initiatives like True North are essential for maintaining the resilience and stability of Texas’ electrical grid.

More details on the Truth North Solar Project
The construction of True North marked several milestones, including the installation of over 488,000 solar modules ahead of schedule in August 2024. At its peak, the project supported 350 jobs, predominantly sourced locally, and is anticipated to contribute more than $40 million in property taxes over its lifespan, directly benefiting public services such as safety, fire protection, and local schools. Betsy Burnett, Superintendent of Mart Independent School District, emphasized the project’s impact, stating that without initiatives like True North, small districts like Mart ISD wouldn’t experience the financial benefits that enhance educational facilities.

True North represents a significant addition to Meta’s renewable energy portfolio in Texas, complementing several agreements the company has secured within the state. In March 2025, Meta signed a PPA with RWE to purchase the entire output of the forthcoming 200 MW Waterloo Solar project in Bastrop County, with construction set to begin in late 2025. Earlier, in January, Meta entered into four Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreements with Spanish renewable energy developer Zelestra, facilitating the construction of four solar projects across Hopkins, Lamar, Lampasas, and Henderson Counties, totaling 595 MWac (720 MWdc). Additionally, in December of the previous year, Meta finalized a PPA with Longroad Energy to acquire 100% of the output from the 300 MWac (400 MWdc) ‘1000 Mile’ solar project in Yoakum County. These initiatives underscore Meta’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, ensuring a long-term clean energy supply while supporting Texas’ growing economy.
