Azerbaijan Railways Inc. (ADY) has reached a major milestone with the Horadiz-Ağbend Railway Line. Cavad Elövsetov, Construction Manager of the Department of Construction Project Management, confirmed that a section of the line is now complete. Freight transport to the Aras Economic Zone Industrial Park has already started. This achievement marks a key logistical step that is expected to boost the region’s economic potential.

Horadiz-Ağbend Railway Line project factsheet

  • Total Length: 110.4 km (main line) and 140.6 km including side roads.

  • Stations: 26 stations constructed along the route.

  • Bridges and Crossings: 3 bridges and 4 automobile crossings built.

  • Galleries and Tunnels: 7 galleries and 3 tunnels included in the project.

  • Construction Phases: Completed in three stages, with the first phase enabling freight transport.

  • Engineering Work: Complex works, including a 60-meter-wide mine clearance operation, completed successfully.

  • Tunnel Construction: Two tunnels use a closed method, while one uses an open method; reinforced concrete work is near completion in the closed tunnels.

  • Progress Status: Rail-sleeper frames installed on a 75.6 km section; overall project completion is at 67%.

Construction phases and engineering advances

The railway project involves extensive engineering work. In the second phase, the Hudaferin hydroelectric power plant is being protected from water-level risks, and additional bridges are being built. During the third phase, construction of earthworks and engineering structures continues, particularly for the three tunnels. Concrete and plastering work is ongoing in the open tunnel, while reinforced concrete work nears completion in the closed tunnels.

The Horadiz-Ağbend Railway will significantly increase the region’s logistics capacity once fully operational, marking an important step forward for Azerbaijan’s infrastructure and industrial growth.

This development complements broader regional initiatives, such as Türkiye’s Kars–Iğdır–Aralık–Dilucu Railway Line, which will link Eastern Anatolia with Azerbaijan, Nakhchivan, and the Zangezur Corridor, creating new trade opportunities across the South Caucasus.
