Construction workers in South Africa will now enjoy a higher remuneration increase of between7.5% and 12% valid from November 1 2015, Building Industry Bargaining Council has announced. This comes after the council concluded a three year wage agreement in 2013.

Employers and employees in Overstrand, Boland, Amesbury and the Cape Peninsula areas are represented by the Allied Trades Association Western Cape and Master Builders‘; Boland Master Builders ; Wood and Allied Workers’ Union of South Africa; Building Workers’ Union; National Union of Mineworkers and the Building Construction and Allied Workers’ Union.

The move is aimed at averting any wage strikes among construction workers in South Africa, and will be an added advantage to the industry and also a sure sign of valid satisfaction. “We have not witnessed any industry wide strikes within the jurisdiction of the BIBC for over two decades,” said Ronel Sheehan, secretary for the BIBC.

The BIBC will now apply to have the increases among other negotiated changes made to the agreement. The harmonization is due to the council’s commitment to wage equality between all the areas within its scope.

The joint agreement is aimed at ensuring stability and security in the building industry and governs the industry as a whole. It also covers critical elements of minimum wages and benefits and clauses that have wide-ranging effects on the industry as a whole.
