Centennial, a Dallas-based real estate company, has disclosed plans to build on its Hawthorn 2.0 renovation of Vernon Hills Hawthorn Mall, a super-regional shopping center.
The mall, which was built in 1973, now has more than 120 businesses. In 2019, Centennial first revealed plans to renovate Hawthorn Mall. They announced they would feature upscale multifamily apartments, and new food and shopping options. Additionally, an indoor and outdoor meeting areas.

The updated designs almost increase the size of the new construction on the land. They consist of 162 senior housing units, a 25,000-square-foot grocery store, and 109,000 square feet of outdoor shopping.
An insight into the Hawthorn Mall’s proposed features and amenities
The opening of Center Park, a 15,190 square foot outdoor area in the former Center Court of the mall. There are lawn games and soft furniture at Center Park.
A new main entrance for the shopping center and a wider outdoor public plaza are both parts of the revised plan. The plan asks for the relocation of 250 units. As a result, this will improve pedestrian access to the mall.
Additional retail, dining, and entertainment space will be added as part of Hawthorn 2.0 to the area outside of the Hawthorn Row integrated streetscape. The Domaine, a 311-unit apartment complex built in two four-story buildings on the east side of the mall, is a component of the updated plans for Hawthorn Mall.
Furthermore, a further 250-unit structure will be part of the construction, bringing the total number of flats up to 561.
Significance of the project
“Our Hawthorn 2.0 plans’ expansion improves on the center’s initial goal of becoming a master-planned, mixed-use attraction,” said Sam Whitebread. The latter is the vice president of development for Centennial.
He added that Hawthorn 2.0 will provide a best-in-class community with a diverse range of contemporary rental units and the comfort and convenience of retail, dining, and entertainment all in a single readily accessible complex.
According to Jeff Rutzen, general manager of the shopping center, “The new, expanded concept for Hawthorn 2.0 offers everything customers desire in a modern, linked day-to-night neighborhood.”
