CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. — A transformative era has begun for Charleston International Airport as construction officially kicks off for the highly anticipated West Gates Expansion Project. It joins a list of other US airports that are experiencing major expansion works.
Airport officials say this expansion marks a significant milestone in strengthening Charleston’s position as a major gateway for millions of travelers each year — boosting capacity, improving convenience, and preparing the region for more direct domestic and international flights.
West Gates Expansion: New Concourse to Add Five Gates
The centerpiece of this expansion is the new West Gates concourse. Originally planned as a temporary modular facility, airport leaders pivoted to a permanent design that delivers a far superior passenger experience. At a cost of US$100m it is set to transform the airport into a modern internationa hub. In April the airport announced federal funding to the tune of US$23m to set the ball rolling had been secured under the airport improvement program. We recently also reported how North Dakota Airports had also received US$100m in fedeal funding towards expansion.
The Charleston International Airport Expansion Project will feature 40,000 square feet of new passenger space, 23,000 square feet of operational space, soaring 12-foot ceilings, airfield views, and five new gates — increasing gate capacity by 15%. The added space will also include upgraded concessions and amenities designed to meet growing demand for flights in and out of Charleston.
Airport President and CEO Elliott Summey says the Charleston International Airport Expansion Project represents Charleston’s commitment to retaining its reputation as one of America’s cleanest, safest, and most convenient airports.
More Flights, More Destinations, More Opportunities
Summey noted that the new gates are expected to enable two to three new international destinations and up to ten new nonstop domestic routes — a major boost for both residents and the regional economy.
“We are the first and last impression some people have of Charleston,” said Summey. “Being able to connect them nonstop to the rest of the country is very important.”
Airport officials are working closely with airline partners to finalize new destinations, with announcements expected once negotiations are complete.
New Parking Garage: Largest in South Carolina
To support the expected surge in passengers, construction is also underway on a massive six-level parking garage — the largest in South Carolina.
The new facility will add 7,500 parking spaces, including a new rental car pavilion to streamline the rental and return process directly outside the terminal. The first phase, adding 2,500 spots, is scheduled to open in November 2026. The entire garage is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
“This new garage is a significant investment in Charleston’s future and ensures we’re ready for tomorrow’s air travel demands,” Summey said.
Airport Connector Road to Ease Congestion
Another key piece of the Charleston International Airport Expansion Project is the new Airport Connector Road — a dedicated five-lane access road designed to reduce congestion along International Boulevard.
Approved by the Federal Highway Administration, the connector will ease traffic for travelers, Boeing employees, and visitors to the North Charleston Coliseum.
Construction on the connector is set to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and will take approximately two years to complete.
