Children’s Mercy Kansas City has unveiled a transformative $152 million expansion plan for Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas (CMHK), reaffirming its commitment to developing pediatric healthcare and expanding access to lifesaving medical care. This massive expansion will introduce cutting-edge facilities, new clinical programs, and state-of-the-art infrastructure to provide improved care for families in the region.

The expansion is already in progress, with the first phase covering surgical services. This includes the remodeling of the Sterile Processing Department and the addition of state-of-the-art pre-op, post-op, and procedural spaces. These upgrades are scheduled to be completed by summer 2026, making the surgical care more efficient and patient-focused.

Being Kansas’ one and only freestanding children’s hospital, this project showcases Children’s Mercy’s dedication to providing the highest quality of medical care in closer proximity to home for deserving families. CEO & President Alejandro Quiroga, MD, MBA, reaffirmed the significance of the project, citing its value to make outpatient care simpler, renovate hospital buildings, and develop a cohesive and patient-centered campus.

New Medical Office Building (MOB)

The new growth features, as a central component, a cutting-edge Medical Office Building (MOB) where outpatient care now scattered into various sites would be consolidated under one roof to enhance convenience and continuity of care. The MOB is scheduled to open during the summer months of 2027.

Besides infrastructure improvements, the hospital will open a number of new specialized programs, including inpatient rehabilitation, intensive outpatient programs, an expanded GI Motility program, and a Neuroscience Center of Excellence. These will significantly enhance the capacity of the hospital to treat advanced pediatric disorders.

The hospital will renovate spaces freed up by outpatient consolidation to further enhance the patient and staff experience. These improvements will conclude by summer 2029.

Additionally; Parking facilities will be enhanced, entrance doors upgraded, and exterior improvements made to improve accessibility and wayfinding so that these improvements can take place. Parking and emergency services will remain available despite the construction to ensure uninterrupted care for patients.
