Cincinnati Children’s is planning a $365 million expansion at its Liberty Campus, a project intended to increase greatly the accessibility of pediatric care to families in Butler County and surrounding areas. The large plan will include a substantial increase in inpatient hospital beds, new surgical operating rooms and a large medical office building.
Key Features of the Expansion
The expansion will more than double the current inpatient capacity by adding 72 new beds to the existing 42, resulting in a total of 114 inpatient beds upon completion. The project also features:
Four New Operating Rooms and Three Surgical Procedure Rooms: These additions will support advanced surgical care.
Emergency Department Expansion: Ten new rooms will be added to accommodate growing demand.
Medical Office Building: A four-story structure will house numerous outpatient specialty clinics, relocating services currently provided within the hospital to free up space.
Renovated Existing Space: Over 100,000 square feet of the hospital will be upgraded to improve patient flow, expand imaging capabilities with eight new rooms, and enhance facilities like the pharmacy, lab, and Sterile Processing Department.
Cincinnati Children’s Liberty Campus Expansion Timeline
Site preparation will begin in March 2025, with construction of the medical office building starting in summer 2025. This building is expected to be completed by 2027. The hospital’s four-story addition, including the new inpatient beds and operating rooms, is slated for completion in summer 2028. Renovations of existing spaces will follow, with a target completion date in summer 2029.
Dr. Steve Davis, president and CEO of Cincinnati Children’s, emphasized the importance of the project: “We are expanding our ability to serve children and families in and around Butler County by bringing more services to their front doors. This our expansion commitment reflects to combining advanced technology with personal touches inspired by input from patient families, the community, and our dedicated staff.”

Cost
The $365 million investment covers design, construction, and state-of-the-art medical equipment. This expansion is expected to create at least 250 new jobs over five years at the Liberty Campus, which currently employs more than 1,025 staff members. The entire Cincinnati Children’s system employs over 19,500 people.
The Liberty Campus, which opened in 2008, initially featured emergency services, operating rooms, clinics, and 12 inpatient beds. Since its first day of operation, it has been a vital healthcare hub for the northern suburbs. The planned expansion will further solidify its role in providing world-class pediatric care.
In addition to expanded clinical services, these enhancements include a new lobby and patient drop off area, outdoor dining spaces, and increased administrative and educational areas to support staff and community needs, in addition to the expansion of clinical services during the project.
Upon completion, the Liberty Campus will not only serve as a critical resource for local families but also reinforce Cincinnati Children’s reputation as a leader in pediatric healthcare. The expansion represents a forward-thinking investment in both the community and the future of pediatric medicine.
