Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has initiated Project Anker, a green hydrogen production facility in Germany. The ambitious project is initiated through CIP’s Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I) and the Freisen Elektra Green Energy AG. Moreover, it is scheduled to have an electrolysis capacity of 400MW with plans to expand capacity to 800MW later. Project Anker is strategically located near Wilhelmshaven, an important energy and industrial hub. Estimates highlight that the project will produce 80,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, benefiting key German industries. The power will supply the steel and chemical industries, as well as the transport sector. Moreover, it will bolster the regional economy in Lower Saxony by creating new jobs. The monumental project will be powered by renewable energy from the grid, supported by offshore and onshore wind. Wind energy will also be integrated into powering the project.
Project Anker as Germany’s Significant Renewable Energy Project
Project Anker has been hailed by CIP as a project that will be of immense significance once fully commissioned. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 2.4 million tons by substituting fuels with green hydrogen. This is equivalent to the emissions of approximately 340,000 households. “Project Anker has the potential to make an important contribution to Germany’s journey towards a carbon-neutral future,” noted Felix Pahl, partner at CIP. He also noted that CIP is committed to utilizing the larger potential in green hydrogen despite slower-than-expected market development. Furthermore, he said that the company remains committed to investment in large-scale renewable infrastructure solutions. The main aim of this is to decarbonize energy-intensive industries. “We look very much forward to bringing the project to realization together with our new partners at Freisen Elektra,” he added.
