Willmott Dixon will partner Oxford City Council on the £10.9m Oxford decarbonisation deal on reducing carbon emissions from the public leisure centres. The scheme will see installation of water and air source heat pumps in four leisure centres across the city. The £10.9m Oxford decarbonisation deal is part of the council’s plan for a Zero Carbon Council in its own estate and operations by 2030, with the leisure centres responsible for almost 40% of current carbon emissions in buildings.
The United Kingdom is now in the third carbon budget period of 2018 to 2022. The Climate Change Committee earlier in the year revealed that the UK is back on track to meet the target of around 37% reduction in emissions in comparison to 1990 by 2022, but it is not on track to fulfill the targets outlined in the fourth and fifth carbon budgets—a 51% reduction in contrast to 1990 levels by 2025 and a reduction of 57% compared to 1990 levels by 2030. The committee stated that the Government will need to “introduce more challenging measures” if the countries is to fulfill future carbon budgets and the net zero target for 2050.
