The Otay Mesa port of entry has begun construction on the northbound pedestrian booths in San Diego. This is part of a larger modernization and expansion project.
Floor-to-ceiling construction barriers will be installed inside the pedestrian building. This will as a result allow for the installation of the new booths with little to no disruption to pedestrian activities. It will then reopen with a total of six pedestrian booths.
Furthermore, the old booths will be replaced after the first six pedestrian booths are finished being built. The project aims to increase the number of pedestrian processing lanes from 6 to 12 lanes. Otay Mesa port of entry project’s pedestrian component is scheduled to be finished in the spring of 2023.

Commentary on The Otay Mesa port modernization project
“I am pleased to inform you that the project has received federal financing in the amount of $150 million. I have been happy to support efforts to modernize the transportation infrastructure along the San Diego County-California border. The efficiency of cross-border travel, which is a major driver of California’s economy, must be improved, according to Senator Alex Padilla.
The San Diego region, California, and our country as a whole are going to experience a paradigm shift as a result of the new Otay Mesa East Port of entry. This $150 million federal grant for building our region’s third port of entry is an important investment. It will boost cross-border trade, reduce border wait times, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. This is according to Gloria.
