Plans are underway for the construction of 90 inexpensive, long-term supportive housing units, dubbed The Cove in Long Beach.
The project will be developed on the site where Century Villages was built back in the 1950s. This village development was necessitated by the Long Beach Naval Shipyard’s staff’s need for accommodation. However, the shipyard closed in 1997 following which the property was transferred to the City of Long Beach.
The new plans call for 29 general affordable units, and one manager’s apartment. In addition,60 supportive units will be built for formerly homeless veterans. Moreover, the four-story modern building will have a podium courtyard, classrooms, a gym, and case management provider offices.
The project to integrate with neighboring infrastructure
According to the architect, The Architects Collective, “The proposal intentionally integrates with upcoming phases of campus expansion. Additionally, it forges a relationship with existing buildings, open space, and circulation.
It thus interacts with a neighboring structure, realigns the nearby street, and widens the current network of pedestrian crossings. Moreover, an existing courtyard to the north is enlarged and completed by the ‘U’-shaped building.
The project is spearheaded by Century Housing the developer behind The Century Villages at Cabrillo, Long Beach. The general contractor is Walton Construction Services. The Cove in Long Beach is sponsored by The No Place Like Home program of Los Angeles County and the Home Depot Foundation. Wells Fargo, and the City of Long Beach are also a part of the project enablers.
Plans for The Cove at Long Beach
The Cove in Long Beach is set to be completed by the end of 2023 at a total estimated cost of US$ 47.5M. It will accommodate households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the regional median income level. Rent will range from $621 to $1,242 per month.
Speaking on the project Robert Garcia said that the City’s dedication to constructing high-quality, reasonably priced housing in Long Beach is reflected in this development. Garcia is the mayor of Long Beach.
He further noted that the city was tremendously appreciative of Century Housing and all of its partners for investing in vital services and safe, secure housing for our Veterans.
