The construction of a 10MW flare gas to power plant in Egypt has been completed by Aggreko, a provider of modular power and energy services. Expandable to a maximum output of 15 MW, the facility is the largest of its kind in Africa.

To ensure the reduction of its overall energy costs and reduce emissions from the oil field. Aggreko suggested a centralized power station using flare gas instead of diesel to eliminate waste connected with flare gas, lower its carbon footprint, and lower the cost of energy for the business in order to increase efficiencies for the client.

Aggreko was able to replace all of the diesel generators with its custom solution, connecting 26 wells through 30 km of overhead transmission. Additionally, it was able to provide roughly 10MW of continuous electricity to power operations. This alternative results in annual carbon emissions savings of 52,348.5 tons of CO2 and total client savings of $25 million.

Remarks on the flare gas to power plant in Egypt

Manager of Aggreko Africa in Egypt, Hesham Tawfik Elshamy said, “Oil and gas firms around the world have a big chance to switch to cleaner energy while also reducing waste from flare gas, which is plentiful in the area. At Aggreko, we have the ability to design and engineer complex gas flaring to power solutions that enable our customers to meet their emission reduction targets. As well as reduce their energy costs, while also protecting them from the need for significant upfront capital investment.

“There is always more that can be done, even if Egypt has made remarkable gains in lowering flare gas. Furthermore, given that Africa as a whole struggles to have access to electricity, there is a huge potential to use this flare gas to power projects to produce electricity for the continent.”

Aggreko has been conducting business in Egypt since 2015. As a result, it has continued to make significant investments in the Egyptian market through the training of local laborers. In addition, Aggreko is helping in the continent’s efforts to cut emissions in accordance with international agreements.
