The construction of Hwange Teachers’ College, which would be Matabeleland North province’s first teacher training school, is scheduled for construction early next year. Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Minister Richard Moyo stated this on Monday during the inauguration of an early childhood education (ECE) block at Nechibondo Primary School in Hwange.

Currently, the Hwange teachers’ college is housed in a rented space. According to Moyo, the Hwange Local Board has already donated property for the development of offices and a campus. Early next year, construction is planned to begin and the Hwange Teachers’ College is envisioned to assist in overcoming the province’s teacher shortage.

Hwange has historically relied on instructors trained at Bulawayo’s United College of Education and Hillside Teachers’ College, as well as Gwanda’s Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic College, since independence. The school block at Nechibondo, according to Moyo, was built with devolution monies. He went on to say that residents are active in establishing the development agenda in their localities under devolution.

Ensuring the Project’s High Quality

According to him, the focus of all development initiatives should be on excellent quality in order for them to have the desired impact on communities. The minister also took a clear position on the required grade of work on the project, warning that contractors that perform subpar work on projects will not be permitted.

“Let me warn local authorities in the province that failure to come up with high-quality projects amounts to sabotaging the government which is providing financial resources for development,” Moyo stated.

Moyo also encouraged the town’s local councilors to serve as watchdogs over local government projects to ensure that they achieve the required standards. He went on to say that as a result, councilors will be able to deliver the finest service to the people.
