Work is underway for Kype Muir wind farm extension, ‘UK’s tallest onshore wind turbines’ in Lanarkshire. The Kype Muir wind farm extension, situated 5km south of Strathaven, will have the power to offer annual electricity needs of a city larger than Aberdeen when completed. The wind turbines will stand at 200m tall. Their construction will provide more than 90 local jobs with the Hamilton -based company Banks Renewables beginning the work.
The extension exercise will complement the Kype Muir wind farm to have a total installed power of 155MW, suited to fulfil power necessities of around 112,000 homes annually. A leading global manufacturer Nordex will supply and install the project’s turbines while the Balance of Plant tender was awarded to a Scottish civil engineering contractor R J McLeod. Contracts costing almost £10m will be available to local suppliers in the surrounding parts initiated by Banks Renewables’ Connect2Renewables initiative, which brings the social, economic and environmental benefits of its project to the locals. Also a community fund linked to the Kype Muir extension project will offer around £10m funds for community improvement projects in the local area over the site’s 30-year lifespan.

When added to the present Kype Muir wind farm community fund, then there will be £770,000 more funds, set for community development projects annually that both sites are operational. Initial works began recently on the site, with erection of the turbines due to start by summer 2022. The project is scheduled to go live by last part of next year. The managing director at Banks Renewables, Richard Dunkley uttered that the landmark project for everyone and the wider Scottish renewable energy sector they continue to increase the contribution to the UK’s journey towards Net Zero and COP26.
“The Kype Muir extension will be the first UK wind farm to have highly efficient 200m turbines with an annual average output per turbine of 15GWh, compared to an average of 9GWh on the existing Kype Muir turbines. The project will substantially increase the amount of renewable energy that the wind farm can produce.
