The construction of major road in Zambia is in good progress, the Road Development Agency (RDA) has said. The road in question is the upgrade of 109KM Mumbwa-Itezhi Tezhi Road which includes 2.2km of the Ikonkaile to Itezhi tezhi Boma Access Road.

According to a progress report released by the Road Agency, the construction of major road in Zambia is being undertaken by the Build Trust Construction Limited as a joint venture with Powerflex at the cost of US $23.52m. The two companies signed the contract in February 2014 and the completion date is set for March 2016.

The contractors had already advanced with the first seal surfacing of 9.8km while the second seal was at 4.94km. The report further indicated that clearing and grabbing works on the road had been completed while drainage works was currently being worked on half of the 109km section.

63.6km of the road had earth works filled while 56.94km of the Subbase had been covered. 18.24km had been primed while 63.56km of detour completed. The project is being supervised by Zulu Burrow Development Consultants.

The project construction was commission in August 2014 by the Government under the Link Zambia 8000 road projects which aims at improving road infrastructure countrywide through opening of new road links to the province and districts in the country.

Upon completion, the Mumbwa- Itezhi tezhi road will create investment opportunities while at the same time easing movement for farmers and produce to the markets.

Travel time and vehicle operation costs will also reduce while tourism to the Kafue National Park will be boosted.
