The state of California has begun construction of a 10,000-mile broadband network in Los Angeles. This follows the governor’s US$6.5 billion investment to expand broadband infrastructure and enhance internet access for unserved and underserved communities.

The “Middle Mile” internet network officially began construction near State Route 67 near Poway in San Diego County. The vast $3.6 billion project, where Newsom Administration officials gathered as 500 feet of fiber optic cable were blown through the conduit.

The proposed network will span the whole of California. It is an effort to provide millions of Californians who do not currently have access to dependable, high-speed internet service. A little more than one in five Californians lack access to dependable and reasonably priced fast internet.

Funds for “last mile” initiatives will support internet connections from “middle mile” lines to residences and businesses. Furthermore, as initiatives to make sure people can afford broadband access where it is already available.

Senate President pro-Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon introduced Senate Bill 156, which was signed into law by Governor Newsom in July 2021 and expanded the state’s broadband fiber infrastructure and improved internet connectivity for households and businesses.

It includes provisions for the $3.25 billion initially allocated for the construction, operation, and upkeep of a state-owned, open-access Middle Mile network, or high-capacity fiber connections that carry more data more quickly over greater distances between local networks. A further $550 million General Fund was part of the 2022 Budget Act to assist the Middle Mile Broadband Initiative.

“California has moved a step closer to eliminating the digital divide. Because livelihoods depend on fair access to a dependable and quick internet connection, we are commencing construction right now. We plan to put cheap high-speed internet in every home in California. No matter what zip code they reside in, all Californians should be able to participate in the vibrant and diverse economy of the Golden State,” said Governor Newsom.
