Construction of Onamafila clinic in the Ohangwena region’s Oshikunde constituency, Namibia is set to be completed in December this year.

The US $1.2M project commenced in November 2019 and was set to be completed on 4 June 2021. However, Ongoma Trading, the project’s contractors attributed the delays to lack of building materials, due to the Covid-19 pandemic affecting provision of materials by suppliers.

Among the materials need include; cement, leap channels, doors and window frames, and diesel for the tractor they use to deliver bricks to the site. Additionally, bad roads in the Ohangwena Region have also hindered the pace of construction of the clinic. Ben Kathindi, the Onamafila clinic’s project manager however affirmed that the project will be done by date 4 of December this year.

Health infrastructure in Ohangwena

“The Ministry of Health and Social Services is trying its best to pay. However, there is very slow progress on site. Less than 50% of the work has been completed, since 21 door frames and all window frames are still missing from the building,” he said.

The health infrastructure in Ohangwena region is in a commendable state. This is according to Ohangwena Governor Usko Nghaamwa. Currently, Ohangwena has at least 35 clinics, of which three are new awaiting official opening. The three brand new faculties plus one donated expecting mothers’ house were constructed to the tune of US $1.5M The facility for expecting mothers, named Josua Hanyango, was recently constructed and donated to Okongo Village Council by the former first lady Penehupifo Pohamba.
