Construction is underway on the largest community of 3D-printed homes at Wolf Ranch in Georgetown, Texas. The works are being carried out by Lennar Corporation and ICON.
Lennar is the leading homebuilder of new homes for sale in the USA’s most desirable real estate markets. ICON on the other hand is a company that develops advanced construction technologies that advance humanity by using 3D printing robotics, software, and advanced materials.
This far, several of ICON’s fleet of robots are currently available at the Wolf Ranch site to begin the printing process. This new community will provide about 100 homes, which makes it the largest and the world’s first housing project involving robots.
The developers are hoping to combine the digital possibilities of 3d printing with sustainable features to provide affordable housing options. ICON also mentioned that the Wolf Ranch project would set the standard for the future of homebuilding in Texas. Especially since the design features technologically advanced, energy-efficient, and architecturally striking apartments.
Development plans for the Wolf Ranch apartment community
ICON will make use of its Vulcan 3D printer for the Wolf Ranch project, just like in other ICON projects. The 3D printers will expel a cement-like proprietary mixture called Lavacrete from their nozzles in layers to build the structures. Afterward, the human builders will complete the project by adding the metal roof, doors, windows, and other necessary features.
According to the developers, the 3D printing technology will prevent wastage and save time on the Wolf Ranch project. Based on ICON’s previous prototypes, the timeframe for building a house ranging from 90 to 200-square-meters takes between 5-7 days of printing. Other more traditional techniques such as timber frame can take up to 16 weeks for the same area.
The Wolf Ranch community will feature eight different styles of residence, ranging in size from 1,574 – 2,112 square feet (146-196 square meters). However, the homes will be spread across one floor, offering residents three or four bedrooms and up to four bathrooms. BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group co-designed the apartment community and the overall design used was influenced by traditional Texas-style ranches.
Other amenities include rooftop solar systems for each home, Ring Video Doorbell, Wi-Fi-operated lock, smart thermostat, and security packages. ICON also said the Wolf Ranch homes will be open for reservations by 2023. But the price range for these homes will start from the mid-$400,000’s.
