The construction of Westown mixed-use mini city in Durban, KZN, South Africa, is set to begun. This comes nearly four years since the initial development’s plans were announced.
The project developers Fundamentum Property Group and JSE-listed Tongaat Hulett marked the start of the project with a ground breaking ceremony.
Implementation of the project
According to the developers, establishing the infrastructure for the Westown mixed-use mini city project will be a top priority. The first phase, therefore, will focus on upgrading Kassier Road, which runs between Alverstone Road and MR559. The road will be upgraded to a two by two lane with medians and sidewalks.
A R1.3 billion Westown Square high street shopping center will be constructed alongside the road, which is scheduled to start in September. The 45,000m2 shopping center be surrounded by medium to high density housing projects, a school, and a private hospital. In addition, the center will be surrounded by office buildings, a warehouse as well as logistics facilities. The latter will function as a stopover for truck drivers heading to Johannesburg.
Westown Square high street shopping center will serve as the anchor of the multibillion rand city development. Along with Woolworths, Shoprite Group will act as the primary anchor of the retail center. with a flagship Checkers Hyper new generation store.
The Westown mixed-use mini city project team
Fundamentum, a private property group based in Durban is the company behind Westown. The company was founded by the seasoned property developer Carlos Correia. Fundamentum invests primarily in retail and commercial real estate in KZN and Gauteng.
Fundamentum is dedicated to changing the tide on projects mixed use projects. This will be achieved by driving a mixed-use urban sustainability agenda at Westown mixed-use mini city. The project is reportedly inclusive, environmentally sustainable, high-energy, safe, and secure.
Correia, said that Westown, the new City of the West, is an innovative, locally driven initiative. He said that it will link individuals with spaces and experiences, creating new opportunities for them to live, work, and thrive.
Moreover, Correia stated that they were eager to begin work. This is especially becasue the first tender for the upgrade of Kassier Road has been awarded. The tender was awarded to a local development group. This group includes contractors Stefanutti Stocks as well as engineering consultants SMEC South Africa.
