Construction Underway on $105M AnMed Central / Clemson Health Campus

Work has started on AnMed Central / Clemson, a massive $105 million healthcare campus designed to offer round-the-clock emergency services and expanded medical facilities for the Central and Clemson communities. The new campus is being constructed at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 123 and 18 Mile Road, where it will serve as the region’s only emergency department.

Upon completion, the facility will provide 24/7 critical care along with primary and specialty physician practices, imaging and laboratory services, physical therapy, and state-of-the-art diagnostic technology such as CT scans, ultrasound, and X-ray. The development should substantially decrease the necessity for local residents to travel to Anderson, Easley, Greenville, or Seneca for emergency care.

The campus will be 150,000 square feet in size, with space reserved for expansion for increasing populations within the region. The project should be completed by in 2027.

Meeting a Growing Need

AnMed President and CEO William Kenley said the project is a direct response to the area’s fast growth of Central, Clemson, and Clemson University. The facility is indicative of the health system’s long-term commitment to delivering local families with a state-of-the-art, modern center, he said.

“This investment will enable our residents to receive the upper echelon of care without having to go out of town, right away,” Kenley said. “It will be less taxing on patients, save valuable time in emergency situations, and improve quality of life for the entire region.”

Currently, the nearest emergency room is at least a 20-minute drive under non-traffic conditions. AnMed Chief Nursing Officer Shaunda Trotter pointed out that lives would be saved by the decreased response times. “Every minute counts in an emergency,” she said. “Having care so readily available will help patients recover quicker and give families greater peace of mind.”

While AnMed Central / Clemson will be the only emergency health care campus serving its immediate region, South Carolina has seen a surge of major health projects in recent months, among them Prisma Health’s $138 million Behavioral Health Hospital in the Upstate and the $350 million Greer Memorial Hospital expansion.

Jobs and Economic Impact

The new health campus will bring a minimum of 50 high-paying jobs once up and running, with more anticipated as the services expand. The development is not only about access to medical care, say local leaders, but also about economic growth.

Clemson Mayor Robert Halfacre called the development a transformative addition to the region, following the recent opening of AnMed Piedmont earlier this year. “We’ve already seen how AnMed Piedmont has improved lives,” he said. “This new facility will do the same, combining technology, expertise, and compassion in a way that strengthens our community.”

Central Mayor Andrew Beckner had similar sentiments, dubbing the new campus “a promise fulfilled” for citizens. “In times of emergencies, those here will know that help is nearby. This project equates to employment, stability, and a healthier future for our neighbors,” he further added.

Expanding AnMed’s Local Footprint

The new Clemson / Central campus will not replace AnMed’s existing location on Tiger Boulevard, which will continue to be open to provide family medicine and pediatrics. Instead, the two locations will complement one another and offer a greater range of services in the area.

As heavy construction heads toward a 2027 completion, the project showcases AnMed’s vision of building regional health campuses to meet growing demand. The Central / Clemson project follows the recently completed AnMed Piedmont near Interstate 85, which opened this year.
