Construction works are set to begin in Kenya in readiness for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which will begin in January next year.
Caf inspectors will be in the country soon so as to examine the five venues assigned to host the championships. However, the contractors who expressed interest in the project have not been contacted, this will eventually delay the works.
The venues
The venues are Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, Nyayo Stadium, Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Kinoru Stadium in Meru and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
Sports Permanent Secretary Kirimi Kaberia nevertheless said that the tendering process will be completed by the end of this week. Construction work will commence thereafter.
“We are on the last stage of evaluating tenders, and in a few days the successful bidders will be notified. We have checked the bids and identified people who have the capacity to deliver in the set timelines,” he said.
Construction details
Additionally, on the tendering advertisements placed by Sports Kenya in June, the institution was looking into a number of things. Among them was to have new grass turfs laid on the five venues and have the stadia fitted with seats. Also to install “electronic and state of the art water reticulation and irrigation system” to maintain the quality of the grass.
As it stands however, work is yet to begin at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, Nyayo and Kenyatta Stadium. The remaining two still lag behind.
The fifth edition of the continental tournament is scheduled to take place between 11 January and 2 February 2018.
