The government of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire is set to receive funds to finance the implementation of its Urban Resilience and Solid Waste Management Project, following the approval of approximately US$ 315M loan for the West African country by the International Development Association (IDA), a subsidiary of the World Bank Group.
The objective of the project is to improve resilience to flood risk, and solid waste management services in vulnerable neighborhoods of the District of Abidjan and targeted secondary cities.

An overview of the project
The project is divided into three segments.
The first one, flood risk mitigation which is allocated US$150 million, will focus on mitigating the negative impacts of recurrent floods through a multi-sectorial approach that combines structural and non-structural measures, including urban drainage and associated roadwork’s, and nature-based solutions for erosion and landslide control and coastal protection.
The second segment is the improvement of the system of collection and disposal of solid waste and it is allocated US$ 120M. It will involve the strengthening of the city’s solid waste collection and treatment/valorization and disposal capacities in the District of Abidjan and selected inter-communal groups of secondary cities through the construction of new solid waste treatment/valorization and disposal facilities, construction of consolidation points and transfer centers among other works.
This segment will also involve the sensitization of communities to improve public behavior on solid waste and improved litter management, as well as capacity building activities for contract management of PPP engagements in the waste sector including recycling activities.
The third segment, allocated US$ 30M, is capacity building and digital technologies for urban resilience. It will involve activities such as professional training on solid waste management and valorization of 3-4 recycling value chains e.g. carton, engravings, and construction waste, and support to the local innovation eco-system and entrepreneurs to generate and support innovative local digital solutions for urban management, etc.
